Dump Truck Capacity: Volume and Weight

Dump Truck Capacity: Volume and Weight

A dump truck is a necessary piece of equipment for construction projects. Whether large or small, your project most likely needs topsoil, stone, sand, concrete, boulders, or other materials, and there is only one way to transport those materials--via dump truck.

How Many Cubic Yards is a Dump Truck?

There are several factors that need to be considered when transporting materials via a dump truck. The first thing that needs to be considered is the dump truck's capacity. Dump trucks come in a variety of sizes, so their capacities and weight limitations vary from truck to truck. The truck's capacity is how much material it can hold. Your construction project might require many different materials, but one thing is consistent--all materials are measured in cubic yards. A cubic yard is a measurement used by contractors to determine the required amount of materials, the price, and the type of truck (or number of truckloads) needed to transport all your materials.

A cubic yard is defined as the volume of a cube with sides of one yard in length and is determined by a mathematical formula. A cubic yard of different materials will have different weights. One cubic yard of mulch weighs approximately 453 kg. Sand, gravel, and stone weigh approximately 1360 kg per cubic yard. Soil weighs approximately 997 kg per cubic yard. These are estimates, but they can give a good idea of what size dump truck is necessary or if more than one truckload will be needed. The moisture conditions of the material should be considered as well, such as if they are wet or dry, will compress down when wet or fluff up when dry.

Dump trucks are not all made the same. Each one is a different size and constructed different, so the capacity in cubic yards varies from truck to truck. But even if a dump truck can carry the cubic yard volume necessary for a construction project, it is important to remember that it is the weight capacity that really determines how much the truck can transport without issue. Dump trucks can transport anywhere from 1360 kg to 22,000 kg.

So, while cubic yards are essential for figuring out the volume of materials needed for a project and how much can fit in a dump truck, weight is really the determining factor. Even if a truck can hold several cubic yards, it doesn't mean it is rated for that much weight. This is especially a factor when considering moving heavier materials--a cubic yard of stone weighs more than a cubic yard of mulch.

A standard sized dump truck is recommended for most construction projects and should be able to transport the necessary volume of materials. A standard dump truck can carry between 10 to 14 cubic yards of material at one time, so you might require more than one truckload. For more complex projects, some commercial dump trucks have the ability to carry two different types of materials at once.
